Roosevelt’s bid for a third term. A Massachusetts congressman with a reputation for pragmatism and party loyalty, Martin would later go on to serve as Speaker of the House in the postwar era. His leadership helped shape Republican policy during a time of intense national debate over America’s role in global affairs and the direction of domestic policy.
