The Earl of Athlone (Prince Alexander of Teck, 1874–1957) was a British royal and military officer appointed as Governor General of Canada in 1940. During World War II, he played an important diplomatic and symbolic role, representing King George VI in Canada and reinforcing Anglo-Canadian ties at a time of global conflict. His wife, Princess Alice of Albany (1883–1981), was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and known for her public service and charitable work. Together, they became prominent figures in Canada’s wartime leadership and ceremonial life.
