William S. Knudsen (1879–1948) was a key figure in American industry and national defense. A former executive at General Motors, Knudsen was called to Washington by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940 to help prepare the U.S. for wartime mobilization. As Director of Production Management and later a Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, Knudsen oversaw the transformation of American industry into a wartime powerhouse. He played a critical role in organizing the mass production of planes, tanks, and weapons, helping establish the United States as the "arsenal of democracy."
