Anastasio Somoza García (1896–1956) was the founder of the Somoza dynasty, which ruled Nicaragua for over four decades. A former National Guard chief trained in the United States, Somoza rose to power in 1937 and quickly consolidated control through a blend of authoritarianism, populism, and U.S. support. By 1948, he was firmly entrenched as Nicaragua’s ruler, maintaining a tight grip over politics, the military, and the economy. His regime was marked by corruption, repression, and strong ties to American business and geopolitical interests during the early Cold War period.
