Augustus Edwin John (1878–1961) was one of Britain’s most celebrated portrait artists in the early 20th century. Known for his expressive style and vivid character studies, he painted numerous prominent figures including T.E. Lawrence, W.B. Yeats, and Winston Churchill. A contemporary of and contrast to the more restrained academic painters of his time, John also gained notoriety for his unconventional lifestyle, deep interest in Romani culture, and outspoken personality.
