George Gallup (1901–1984) was the founder of the Gallup Poll, one of the earliest and most influential organizations in the field of public opinion research. By 1948, Gallup’s name had become synonymous with political forecasting and national surveys, having correctly predicted the outcome of the 1936 and 1940 presidential elections. However, this issue was released during a critical year for Gallup, as the 1948 U.S. presidential election would soon become one of the most famous polling miscalculations in history—when most pollsters, including Gallup, incorrectly predicted a win for Thomas Dewey over incumbent Harry S. Truman.
