Francisco Franco (1892–1975) rose to power after leading Nationalist forces to victory during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). By 1946, he ruled Spain as a military dictator under the title “Caudillo.” Though Spain remained officially neutral during World War II, Franco's authoritarian regime and previous ties to Axis powers drew scrutiny from the international community in the war’s aftermath. At the time of this issue, Franco was facing growing pressure and diplomatic isolation from Allied nations, particularly as the world reevaluated relationships with non-democratic regimes in the postwar order. Despite the criticism, Franco maintained a firm grip on Spain, ruling until his death in 1975.
