Maurice Thorez (1900–1964) was a central figure in postwar French politics and one of Europe’s most prominent communist leaders. As head of the Parti Communiste Français (PCF), he played a major role in shaping France’s political landscape in the aftermath of World War II. By 1946, Thorez had entered the provisional French government as Deputy Prime Minister, during a brief period of cooperation between communists and other political factions. A staunch supporter of the Soviet Union, Thorez championed workers’ rights, social reforms, and nationalizations, while facing rising tensions amid the onset of the Cold War.
