Maurice Thorez (1900–1964) was one of the most influential political figures in postwar France. As the longtime leader of the French Communist Party (PCF), Thorez rose to prominence in the 1930s and gained significant power after the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. In 1946, he served as Vice Premier in the French Provisional Government, during a brief period when communists held major positions in the cabinet. Thorez was a staunch advocate for labor rights, state control of industry, and strong ties with the Soviet Union. His prominence during this era reflected the deep ideological divide shaping Europe in the early years of the Cold War.
