Robert A. Taft (1889–1953), son of former U.S. President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft, was a prominent Republican senator from Ohio and a leading figure in American conservative politics during the mid-20th century. By 1940, Taft had already made his mark as a first-term senator, gaining national attention for his opposition to the New Deal and his advocacy of non-interventionist foreign policy on the eve of World War II. He would go on to become one of the most influential voices in the Republican Party, earning the nickname “Mr. Republican.” Taft later co-authored the landmark Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, which significantly impacted U.S. labor law.
