James C. Petrillo (1892–1984) was a major figure in the American labor movement and a central force in the music industry during the mid-20th century. As head of the AFM, Petrillo was best known for his aggressive stance on behalf of musicians’ rights—most notably his leadership during two major recording bans (1942–1944 and 1948), in which union members stopped making records in protest of unfair compensation practices. These actions significantly impacted the recording industry and led to royalty agreements that shaped how musicians were paid. His leadership style was tough, controversial, and deeply influential.
