William Stuart Symington (1901–1988) was appointed the first U.S. Secretary of the Air Force in 1947, following the creation of the independent Air Force as part of the National Security Act. A former industrialist and executive, Symington played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. air power policy during the early stages of the Cold War. By early 1948, he was tasked with modernizing America's air defense capabilities and expanding the Air Force's role in national security. His influence extended into politics as well—he later served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri and was a contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960.
