Stanislaw Mikolajczyk (1901–1966) was a key figure in Poland's struggle for democracy during and after World War II. As Prime Minister of the Polish government-in-exile during the war, he opposed both Nazi occupation and Soviet domination. After returning to Poland in 1945, Mikolajczyk attempted to work within the framework of the Soviet-backed provisional government, becoming Deputy Prime Minister in hopes of securing free elections. By early 1946, he was facing increasing pressure from the Communist Party and Soviet influence, making his political survival and democratic ideals precarious. His resistance to authoritarian control made him a symbol of political courage in postwar Eastern Europe.
