Andrei Zhdanov (1896–1948) was a powerful figure within Joseph Stalin’s inner circle and a key architect of Soviet ideological and cultural policy during the early Cold War. As head of the Soviet Union's cultural affairs and Communist Party secretary for ideology, Zhdanov was responsible for promoting strict state control over literature, music, and the arts, a policy that became known as the Zhdanov Doctrine. By late 1946, he had also emerged as a vocal opponent of Western influence, framing cultural and political life in terms of rigid opposition between the capitalist West and the socialist East. His influence would deeply shape Soviet society and propaganda well into the postwar period.
