Chiang Kai-shek (1887–1975) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Chinese history, serving as the leader of the Chinese Nationalist government (Kuomintang) during and after World War II. Communist forces under Mao Zedong were gaining ground, and Chiang’s government was rapidly losing control of mainland China. Within a year, he would retreat to Taiwan, where he continued to lead the Republic of China in exile.
