George S. Messersmith (1883–1960) was a senior American diplomat known for his critical foreign service posts during the interwar and World War II periods. He served as U.S. ambassador to several key countries, including Austria, Cuba, Mexico, and Argentina. Perhaps most notably, he held the post of U.S. Consul General in Berlin in the 1930s, where he observed and reported on the rise of the Nazi regime. Messersmith played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. diplomatic policy during a time of global upheaval, and by 1946, he was wrapping up his ambassadorship in Argentina, a country under scrutiny for harboring Nazi fugitives and its ambiguous stance during the war.
