Getúlio Vargas (1882–1954) was one of the most influential political leaders in Brazilian history. By 1940, Vargas was ruling Brazil under the Estado Novo (New State), an authoritarian regime he established in 1937 that emphasized nationalism, industrialization, and centralized power. His leadership marked a pivotal shift in Brazil’s development, fostering economic modernization while suppressing political opposition. Though criticized for authoritarian tactics, Vargas also introduced major labor and social reforms, earning lasting support among Brazil’s working class. During World War II, he strategically navigated international pressures, aligning Brazil with the Allies in 1942 after initially maintaining neutrality.
