This December 2, 1941 issue of Look Magazine features rising Hollywood actress Barbara Britton on the cover, dressed in the uniform and insignia of the American Women’s Volunteer Services (AWVS). Britton, a former junior college student and Tournament of Roses queen, had just been discovered by a Hollywood agent and signed by Paramount. Her AWVS uniform, styled by Bonwit Teller, reflects the spirit of national service and fashion at the threshold of America’s entry into World War II.
